the whole nine yards

The whole 9 yards is a phrase which is speaking about all of something or in full measure. Nine yards is the length of a typical sports field, usually a football field, therefore when someone refers to someone as being the whole 9 yards, they mean the whole field. Of course the phrase can be used literally, but that is rare. Most often, people use this idiom when speaking figuratively about something which pertains to the whole of something, or to say that all of something exists.
