The long arm of the law is a very common phrase used to speak about the police, the cops, or the law of which they work to enforce. The long arm of the law is an older phrase that may not be used as often as calling them police or cop, but it does mean the same thing. Most often, it is used when someone wants to speak about laws in general, such as one that seems to be strict would be referred to as the long arm of the law.
